Homework for Sunday

This week we have been learning about verbs, please find a song about verbs here:


Notes on the verbs that have been put into the binders/copybook should be colored as in the pictures below:

Verbs in Purple:

action verbs – words that express action
Ex: Salma runs in the race.


linking verbs – words that show a state of being 
Ex: Soulaf is the fastest runner.


helping verbs – words that help the main verb express an action or state of being; helping verbs are part of a verb phrase that includes the helping verb and an action or linking verb
Ex: Ms. Aurelia might win the race. 



infinitive – the base form of the verb; present tense

present participle – used to form continuous tense; made by adding the helping verb “is” before the verb and –ing to the end of the base form of the verb


past – used to express a previous action or a state that previously existed; add –ed

past participle – used to show that something started in the past but still continues; made by adding the helping verb “have” before the verb and –ed to the end of the base form of the verb

Homework for Monday 12th


Students in class today worked on a reading comprehension called Cat Worship and worked on context clues.

Students are to read the passage carefully at home again, correct their mistakes (and try to write a paragraph for question #7 which many did not even try to do in class), and look up in a dictionary the following words:

Homework

Please make sure that the quizzes are corrected for next Sunday, and that students :

  • complete the bonus sheet crosswords if they were not able to complete it in class
  • rewrite sentences with the expressions underlined
  • look up the words enable, obtain, slew, shallow from the reading comprehension in the quiz 
  • rewrite question 8 in their own words, explaining how cacti are able to survive in the desert.

Homework Sunday

Homework for Sunday is to read the story "La Bamba", as many students still have not read it, and answer the comprehension questions given out in class. 

There will be a spelling competition on Sunday on the vocabulary of the story including the vocabulary studied in class. Students should make sure they can use the vocabulary in a sentence of their own:

Applause (noun): the clapping of hands to show enjoyment or approval.
Ex: There was a burst of applause as the band came on stage
Ex: I heard _________ when I finished _____________________.

Debut (noun): the first time that a performer or sports player performs in public. 
Ex: The actor made his debut in the play, Peter Pan.
Ex: The student made her singing _______ in ________________.

Duo (noun): Two people who do something together, especially play music or sing.
Ex: The sisters performed in the show as a singing duo.
Ex: _________ and _________ are a famous ________.

Embarrassed (adjective): Feeling nervous, ashamed or uncomfortable, especially in front of other people. 
Ex: Paul felt embarrassed when he realized he had called his neighbor by the wrong name.

Limelight (noun): The center of public attention.
Ex: Ana’s performance in the play brought her into the limelight.

Pantomime (noun and verb): A way of performing that uses only actions and facial expressions, not words.

Record (noun and verb): A round, flat piece of plastic on which music is stored. 
Ex: A forty-five record has one song on each side.

Rehearsal (noun): Practice for a public performance by people in a play, concert, etc.

Suffix: -WARD
Definition: In a certain direction
Ex: Downward - Toward - Skyward - Upward
- The rocket lifted off and shot skyward.
- Karim watched the golf ball roll downward into the hole. 
- Students tossed the basketball toward the hoop.
- My kite glided upward once the wind picked it up. 

Suffix: -OUS
Definition: Full of 
Ex: Dangerous - Atrocious - Cautious - Ridiculous 
- Riding your bike without a helmet is very dangerous.
- The story is ridiculous because the plot doesn't make sense. 
- An atrocious smell came from the baby's diaper.
- Mohammed knew he should be cautious when crossing the street

Please make sure students have their thesaurus and dictionaries at school. Many students still do not have them, even though it is required since last semester.

The homework for next Sunday is to color the Butterfly, Star, and "Not" Sign.
Students are to find 5 words for each (-non, ir-, in-, im-, il-).
They are also to complete any work that has not been completed this week.

And we are back to school!

This week the students have been given a new way of writing notes which they can either have in their english notebook (preferably A4 format) or in a ring binder. Please make sure that the students are equipped with:

  •  glue 
  •  and that at home they have access to scissors and  coloured pencils.


Please make sure that for homework the colouring and cutting is done at home.
Glueing is only to be done in class to make sure they glue it the proper way

Ill be posting the papers on the blog so that if students loose or make a mistake they can print out the sheets again and start over.

Every week I will be posting the best kept notes and every month will select a winner in each class!

Nouns: (Red) nouns – words that name people, places, things, and ideas

Adjectives: (Brown) adjectives – describing words; words that modify nouns or pronouns

Revision on the 4 types of sentences:

Declarative Sentences (Purple)
make a statement
punctuated by a period
Ex: We always take spelling tests on Sunday. 
Imperative Sentences (Green)
makes a command or polite request
ends with a period or exclamation mark 
Ex: Write your name at the top of the paper. 

Exclamatory Sentences (Pink or Red)
expresses great emotion or excitement 
ends in an exclamation mark
Ex: I forgot to study last night! 
Interrogative Sentences ( Blue)
asks a question
ends in a question mark
Ex: Will I be rewarded if I pass this exam?

Students have been asked to make 4 sentences with the words from the quiz. Please make sure they make up their own sentences showing they have understood the meaning of the 4 words they choose.
They have also been given an extra vocabulary sheet for extra credit points!

Remember that all these words will be on the quiz on Sunday, make sure to study the vocabulary well!

Homework

The only homework for this weekend is to make sure that each student has a Dictionary AND a thesaurus, as some students have still not bought them. They will be needing it for the exercise on Sunday, to practice how to look up definitions in the dictionary and synonyms in the thesaurus. This is very important so please make sure to buy any Children's dictionary and thesaurus. Any bookshop will have these, such as Diwan or Samir we Ali.

English Homework for Sunday

Students should look up the words they do not know from the sheets titled: "Jobs in Space", "Countdown to Adventure", and "On the training floor".

Make sure that students re-read carefully the texts and are ready to answer vocabulary and comprehension questions on Sunday.

Please make sure they have both, dictionary and thesaurus on Sunday, as they will be needing them in class.

Movie Wall-E

Last week we started the new theme for the quarter: SPACE!

We watched the movie Wall-E, please make sure that they have watched the movie if your child was absent in class last week.

All students have to make sure they have learnt the vocabulary for Sunday, make a sentence of their own using each vocabulary word and answered the comprehension questions.

Inhabitant: someone or something that lives in a place; resident.
Ex:The inhabitants of the village knew each other and instantly became suspicious of the stranger walking down the street.

Amiable: having or showing a friendly manner.
Ex: She is so amiable that everybody loves being with her.

Live: to be alive, to have a life rich in experience

Devastate: to destroy or ruin.
Ex:An earthquake devastated the village.

Survive: continue to live or exist in spite of (an accident or ordeal). 
Ex: They had so little food that it was a miracle they survived.

Directive: an official or authoritative instruction
Ex: When your teacher orders you to do your work in class, this is an example of a directive.

Befuddle: confused, mislead
Ex: The road sign, with its arrows pointing in two directions, befuddled most people on the road.

Sedentary: settled and therefore accustomed to sitting or doing little exercise
Ex: A sedentary lifestyle is conducive to weight gain.

Corpulent: obese or overweight
Ex: His sedentary lifestyle contributed to his becoming increasingly corpulent.

Dump: a site for depositing rubbish.
Ex: We took our trash to the town dump.

Pollution: poisons, wastes, or other materials that pollute.
Ex: The sky over the city is filled with pollution.

Extinct: no longer existing.
Ex: Dinosaurs have been extinct for millions of years.

Ecology: the relationships between a group of living things and their environment.
Ex: The ecological disaster of water pollution. 

Disaster: a sudden event causing much damage or suffering.
Ex: The volcanic eruption was a disaster for the town.

Soil: the top layer of the earth's surface.
Ex: This soil is full of clay.

Dust storm: a storm of severe winds that sweep up clouds of dust from land dried up by a drought.

Outer space: region beyond the atmosphere of the earth.
Ex: The spacecraft will fly into outer space to explore the moon.

Space station: a large spacecraft in orbit for a long period of time. Space stations are used for scientific study and for launching other spacecraft.

Trash compactor: A machine that compacts rubbish.

Caution: a warning.
Ex: Pay attention to the signs of caution on the way through the wadi.

Prevent: to keep or stop from happening.
Ex: The iron gate prevented cars from entering.
